Medical Buddy

You Are Not Alone.

Medical Buddy connects people facing medical procedures or treatments with people who have already been through a similar experience.

For people looking for a Buddy

If you’re facing a medical procedure or treatment and would like to talk to someone who understands, Medical Buddy is here for you.

You tell us a little about what you’re facing and what you’d like help with. We then look for someone who has been through a similar experience and is willing to share their story.

Your Buddy isn’t there to give medical advice. They’re there to listen, answer questions from their own experience and help you feel less alone.

For people becoming Buddies

If you’ve been through treatment yourself, you can choose to become a Medical Buddy.

You don’t need to be a medical professional. You simply need to:

  • Have been through a medical procedure or treatment
  • Be willing to listen
  • Be happy to share your own experience in a kind and respectful way

As a Buddy, you don’t tell anyone what treatment they should have. You offer understanding, reassurance and the kind of honest insight that only someone who has “been there” can give.

How Buddies are matched

We do our best to connect people with Buddies whose experiences are as relevant as possible.

Where we can, we look at things like:

  • The type of procedure or treatment
  • The general stage of the journey (for example, before, during or after treatment)
  • Any specific worries or questions you’ve told us about

Sometimes we may not find an exact match, but we’ll always aim to connect you with someone whose experience is close enough to be genuinely helpful.

How communication works

You and your Buddy agree together how you’d like to stay in touch.

This might be:

  • By messages
  • By phone
  • By video call

You decide what you’re comfortable talking about and how often you’d like to be in contact.

Your Buddy is there to support you, not to replace your medical team. If you ever have questions about your treatment or health, your doctor or nurse is still the best person to ask.
